Primary 5 pupils at Bridge of Allan primary school celebrated Pass it on Day by donating and collecting unwanted toys, games, books and clothes, which were passed on to Good Green Fun in Stirling. The total collected came to 121kg, which equals a good saving of CO2 emissions and energy usage for one little primary school class. Congratulations Bridge of Allan primary 5s for doing your bit for people and planet.

Interior designer, John Amabile, cuts the ribbon marking the opening of the Reuse House in Craigmillar, Edinburgh and the launch of Pass it on Day 2010.

John, best known for his role on ITV’s hit interior design show ‘60 Minute Makeover’, has overseen the final stages of the Grand Reuse House Makeover where an empty Edinburgh property has being turned into a home using 100 per cent reused and recycled paint, furniture and carpets.

Commenting on the initiative, John said: “I’m delighted to launch Pass it on Day. Things go out of fashion quickly in the design world but I have always been a big fan of recycling, reusing and reinventing – whether it’s decorating paint tins to look like canal barge plant pots, re-covering chairs and bed headboards or transforming old tyres into attractive fruit bowls.’’

“A long time favourite reuse of mine was to take a pair of unwanted curtains and turn them into duvet covers with matching pillow, or padding them to make attractive throws. Just because we don’t want it doesn’t mean it can’t be loved as is by another or transformed into something useful and wonderful and reused.”

The makeover project, a collaboration between the Community Recycling Network for Scotland (CRNS) and Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association brings together reuse organisations Edinburgh Furniture Initiative (EFI), RePaint Scotland, Spruce Carpets, Fresh Start and Good Green Fun – just some of the many reuse organisations across Scotland working to help people and the environment.

Tayside Recyclers, an environmental charity promoting sustainable living in the Dundee area, is opening its amazing emporium of wares on Pass it on Day. It sells a range of items from clothes and bric-a-brac to beds and washing machines so set aside plenty of browsing time. And if you can bring a donation of household furniture you no longer want then all the better.

If you want to pass on a larger item then Tayside Recyclers can arrange a time to come and collect it from your home. Even if you can’t donate on the 5th, they’re happy to take donations at any time. After all, the Pass it on message is an all year thing.

As luck would have it, the annual Govan Fair takes place on the evening of Friday 4 June and Starter Packs Glasgow will have a float in the procession, on which they’ll be promoting Pass it on Day and encouraging people to pass on their surplus goods and buy reused.

And SPG’s thrift store, The Magpie’s Nest, is just the place to pick up a bargain. It will be open for Pass it on Day on Saturday 5th so if you’re after cool and funky affordable retro gems, look no further.

Bridge of Allan Primary fives are joining in with Pass It On Day by asking the children and staff in the school to donate children’s clothes and toys to pass on to Good Green Fun in Stirling. The class is taking charge of this themselves and will weigh the items donated and keep a record.
